From the foster: Adopted from a rescue in Baja, Chaco’s story before he came to us is largely unknown. We do know he lived with a family before being taken to the rescue. He was about a year old at the time of adoption and he quickly showed some signs of trauma in a family setting. He was protective of me towards my husband but with some patience and training, he developed a great and trusting relationship with my husband. When our baby was born, Chaco’s resource guarding and protection of us increased tenfold and it has become unpredictable. After working with a personal trainer, he recommended we rehome him to a home with a less complex environment.

He is dog friendly, cat friendly with confident kitties, and kid friendly too but can get excitable.

He is very loyal, dedicated to his pack, goofy, energetic when people enter but usually pretty calm. He does well on long walks, also content to hang out and chill inside. He lovvvvves to cuddle and be as close as possible to the ones he loves. He can get protective/anxious, especially of women and children. We suspect Chaco experienced trauma from a man or in a family setting before coming to us. He is very protective of me and our young baby towards my husband. All his anxiety stems from this stressor. otherwise, Chaco is really calm and loving. He gets along well with our cats who are confident but does chase them sometimes. He has to be trained not to “claim” certain areas of the house. Not “yappy” but is vocal when visitors enter. Because of his history, does much better with women than men.

Chaco truly is the most empathetic dog I’ve ever known. He’s so attuned to what his people are feeling and wants to make sure everyone is “ok” all the time. He is so goofy and loving and wants a best friend so badly. Whoever adopts Chaco will truly have a built-in best friend or the rest of his days. He is fiercely loyal and ready to be your ride-or-die.

He would do best in a home with another dog, without young children. House can be mellow or active but Chaco wants to be included while you’re there! Does well alone.
