[San Diego, CA]: The Animal Pad (TAP) today announced the opening of their first medical clearing facility in San Diego. This milestone is a major move for TAP on its mission to save dogs from high kill shelters and the streets of Mexico.
“Ever since the inception of TAP in 2010, it has been our dream to have a facility of our own. Now that dream has become a reality and it will allow us to significantly increase the number of dogs we can rescue, and lives we can touch, both canine and human,” says Stephanie Nisan, founder of TAP.
This news comes in the wake of many recent accomplishments by TAP despite having to overcome the many obstacles thrown their way by the COVID-19 pandemic. Historically, TAP has always been an event-heavy focused organization, relying on several events every month to help raise money, and secure volunteers, fosters, and adopters. Despite this, during the pandemic, TAP has been able to achieve record numbers, such as:
When TAP brings dogs up from Mexico to eventually be adopted, there are many things that need to happen first. Every dog needs medical care by one of our licensed veterinarians which could range from only needing the simplest vaccines, to some even needing several surgeries and around-the-clock care during their recovery. Also, during this process, all dogs must go through a 10-14-day quarantine before going into foster homes, which is mainly where this facility comes in. We can now house significantly more dogs at any given time to start the socialization process. Just since signing the lease about one month ago, TAP has had over 100 dogs come through this facility, all while in the midst of remodeling.
“The new facility serves as the stepping stone to our dogs’ new lives, but is equally important to our volunteers as it allows for a greater sense of community and unity for these animals we love so much” says Nisan.
Although the dogs are always the number one priority for TAP, this facility is also a great achievement for the nearly 200 volunteers. This will now give TAP a place to hold meetings, seminars, and events (when it is safe to do so), and it gives the volunteers a sense of community.

About The Animal Pad: The Animal Pad is a non-profit, all breed dog rescue that focuses on saving dogs from high kill shelters and the streets of Mexico. We get them vet care, place them in foster homes and then find them loving forever families. A few years ago, we turned our attention to the street dogs of Mexico as there is very little help for them. Since then, we have developed a large rescue network in Baja California and we have a sister shelter in Ensenada that we focus on taking dogs from whenever funds allow.
